What to Pack and Bring to the USA

General Information

  • Carry your original I-20, welcome letter, and passport with you. Please keep a copy of your I-20 and passport in your checked baggage.
  • It is strongly recommended that you hand carry evidence of finances and the paper SEVIS fee receipt in case Customs wants to review it.
  • Carry a small amount of money in US dollars for emergencies. A combination of cash, traveler's checks, and credit cards is recommended.
  • Most airlines only allow one piece of checked luggage and one personal item for carry on. Two pieces of checked luggage are sometimes allowed. If checked luggage exceeds 50lbs (22.7kg), extra charges will apply.
  • If you have any health concerns or medical conditions, bring a copy of your medical, dental, and immunization records.
  • Bring items that represent you or your culture. These will help you to connect others to your culture and to feel closer to home.
